Why bergamot, ylang-ylang and jasmine?
The combination of bergamot ylang-ylang essential oils creates a synergy of lightness, calmness, gentle vitality and sensuality. Jasmine lifts this combination upwards, to a light and encouraging place.
Bergamot essential oil (Citrus bergamia) – The bittersweet aroma of bergamot oil is known to promote emotional lightness, relieve depression, and relieve mental and physical stress. It acts gently but effectively on the nervous system, contributing to lasting emotional balance.
For those curious about how?
Controlled clinical studies show that inhaling bergamot essential oil may significantly reduce feelings of anxiety, stress, and mild depression. The main effect stems from the active ingredients limonene and linalool, which act on the central and autonomic nervous systems and help regulate their activity.
For further reading:
Limonene, the main component of bergamot, has been found to activate receptors in the brain stem that encourage activation of the parasympathetic (relaxing) system, while slightly inhibiting the stress axis (HPA axis), which leads to reduced cortisol levels. Linalool has a similar effect to lavender – gently blocking NMDA receptors, thereby reducing nervous arousal. In addition, bergamot has been found to increase the secretion of dopamine and serotonin in the brain, and enhances an overall sense of satisfaction.
Ylang-ylang essential oil (Cananga odorata) – The rich, floral aroma of ylang-ylang oil creates a sense of depth, soft femininity, and deep sensory relaxation. It is an oil with a balancing quality: soothing in situations of emotional arousal, but also instilling a subtle vitality.
For those curious about how?
In aromatherapy, ylang-ylang oil has been found to reduce blood pressure, heart rate, and symptoms of anxiety, and is even linked to feelings of calm, a sense of security, and emotional intimacy. Regular use may also contribute to improved body image and a sense of self-acceptance.
For further reading:
Benzyl acetate, one of the active ingredients in ylang-ylang, stimulates the limbic system – a deep emotional area in the brain – and affects the regulation of emotions. Linalool and gamma-cadinene work to reduce sympathetic arousal (such as high heart rate) through the release of GABA – a calming neurotransmitter. These effects have also been measured in heart rate variability (HRV) and have been shown to reduce psychological stress.
Jasmine essential oil, extracted from jasmine flowers known for their sweet and romantic scent, is used in aromatherapy to lift mood, relieve stress, improve feelings of self-confidence, and encourage romantic and aphrodisiac feelings, thus combining in a way that is opposite to the invigorating bergamot and sensual ylang-ylang. (It is also effective in skin care, especially dry and sensitive skin).
The combination of them is as suitable as rest and breathing.
